occupational therapy

NEW:
Therapy options at the Easton MD "Coastal Retreat Studios & Wellness location!
We now offer Telehealth OT therapy!

How are we using telehealth to help you?

Our occupational therapists (OTs) utilize telehealth services to provide many of the same treatments and activities as utilized in the
in-person, outpatient clinic setting. We are able to guide children in activities to improve fine motor stability such as proper pencil grasp and correctly using scissors. We work on gross motor stability and endurance using muscles in the neck, arms, hands, and torso through a variety of fun games and activities. Other benefits of using telehealth occupational therapy is that it improves access to those who wouldn’t otherwise receive services. It’s a convenient solution for many people and it provides a wonderful opportunity for parent education and inclusion. Telehealth services are here to stay at Kinera as we know they are a sound extension of the services we regularly provide.

Why Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) helps children, teens and adults who have physical, sensory or cognitive delays and disabilities. Occupational therapists can help with emotional, social, and physical needs, enhancing and improving an individual's quality of life.
OT improves a child's play, their school performance, and other daily activities. It also boosts their self-confidence and self-esteem.

OT can address and help to:
  • Develop fine motor skills so they can grasp and release toys.
  • Improve eye–hand coordination needed for play and school skills, such as bat a ball and write letters of the alphabet.
  • Gain basic life skills such as bathing, getting dressed, brushing teeth and self-feeding.
  • Learn positive behaviors and social skills by practicing how they manage emotions and feelings.

Who Might Benefit from Occupational Therapy?
OT can help children, teens and adults who have:
  • birth injuries or birth defects
  • developmental delays
  • sensory processing disorders
  • traumatic injuries to the brain or spinal cord (TBI)
  • learning problems and learning differences
  • autism spectrum disorders
  • juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
  • mental health or behavioral problems
  • orthopedic injuries
  • spina bifida
  • cancer
  • cerebral palsy
  • down syndrome
  • multiple sclerosis
  • severe hand injuries

Occupational therapy helps with:
  • fine motor skills
  • gross motor skills
  • visual-perceptual skills
  • cognitive skills
  • sensory-processing problems

Who Does Occupational Therapy? The two professional levels of occupational practice are:
  • Occupational therapist (OT): An OT has a 4-year bachelor's degree in a related field (such as biology, psychology, or health science) and a master's degree from an accredited occupational therapy program.
  • Occupational therapist assistant (COTA): A COTA has an associate degree from an accredited OTA program. They can carry out treatment plans developed by an OT but can't do patient evaluations.
OTs and COTAs must do supervised fieldwork programs and pass a national certification exam. A license to practice is mandatory in most states, as are continuing education classes.
